How could universal extinction happen?
Scientists need to study the possibilities, and get a better understanding of the universe and our reality. One of the most hopeful sounding hypotheticals for now is vacuum decay. Scientists think it may be triggered by lowering the energy state of a few Higgs boson particles and then the rest of the particles that make up physical matter will follow suit, making matter disappear, and constantly expanding its influence outward at the speed of light. However, we still don’t know how to lower the energy state of Higgs boson particles, and figuring out how to do that would probably be quite the task.
Another proposed method is self replicating sterilization nanobots that can fly in space. In the future scientists may look for other possibilities in string theory, dark matter, dark energy, black holes, or something still unknown to us. Just studying the nature of these things would be helpful because at the time science barely understands most of it.
Still, the leaps in technology and our understanding of the workings of the universe are huge and deliver knowledge which would be unrecognizable and unthinkable to previous generations. There may be solutions which are completely out of the box of our current understanding. Just because it’s not possible now, doesn’t mean it never will be.
Most scientific theories currently expect that the universe as we know it will not last forever. The mission of a universal extinctionist could be to find ways of accelerating the end of the universe, whether this is Heat Death, The Big Rip, The Big Crunch, or otherwise.
Some theorize that the universe is a simulation. In this case, ending the universe could be as simple as stopping the source of the simulation. If the universe is hosted on a computer, it may be possible to crash the simulation or cut the power source.
